How feed quality drives impressions
The causal chain from complete product data to Shopping impression share, how catalog matching, query eligibility and quality signals decide how often your products actually show.
Google can't show a product it doesn't understand. Complete, accurate feed data gets your products matched to Google's catalog, makes them eligible for the queries shoppers type, and earns the quality signals that win auctions. Every impression starts as a feed decision, thin data quietly caps how often you appear before bidding ever enters the picture.
Impressions are decided before the auction
It's tempting to treat impressions as a bidding outcome: bid more, appear more. In Shopping that's only half true. Before any auction runs, Google has to answer three questions about each product, and all three are answered by your feed:
- Do I understand this product well enough to match it to my catalog?
- Is this product eligible for the query this shopper just typed?
- Is this product's data trustworthy enough to show prominently?
A "no" at any stage removes the product from the auction entirely. You can't out-bid ineligibility. This is why two accounts with identical budgets and bids can have wildly different impression share: the difference lives in the feed, upstream of anything you set in Google Ads.
The causal chain, link by link
Link 1: Catalog matching
Google maintains its own product catalog. When your feed arrives, it tries to match each product to a known entry, primarily via identifiers: GTIN, MPN, brand. A clean match unlocks richer placements, better context, and eligibility for comparison surfaces. Link 2: Query eligibility
Shopping has no keywords. Google decides which queries a product can appear for by reading its title, category and attributes. If a shopper types "waterproof hiking boots size 10" and your title says only "Men's Boots", the product may never be judged eligible for that query: the matching signal isn't there. Front-loaded, attribute-rich titles widen the set of queries you're eligible for; thin titles narrow it. This is the single biggest lever most catalogs leave on the table. Link 3: Quality signals
Among eligible products, Google favours those with complete, consistent, policy-safe data: accurate pricing, valid images, coherent variant relationships, no disapproval-risk patterns. This isn't a separate "quality score" number you can read, but it shows up as impression share among products that are otherwise equally bid.
Deep dive Why thin data caps impressions invisibly
The damaging thing about feed-driven impression loss is that it's silent. A disapproved product at least shows up in Merchant Center Diagnostics. But a product that's approved yet under-matched (technically live, just not eligible for most of the queries it should be) generates no error anywhere. It simply earns fewer impressions than it could, forever, and nothing flags it.
Consider a 5,000-product catalog:

None of these throw a hard error. Aggregate reporting shows "impressions down slightly" with no cause. This is exactly why a single Feed Health Score is useful: it makes invisible eligibility loss visible as one number that moves when your data does. Enrichment writes the fixes (complete titles, specific categories, matched identifiers) into a supplemental layer over your source data, so your original feed is never overwritten while the products become eligible for the impressions they were missing.
What this means in practice
- Diagnose eligibility before bids. If impressions are low, check whether products are matched and query-eligible before assuming you're under-bidding. Raising bids on ineligible products spends nothing and fixes nothing.
- Fix the biggest blocks first. Titles and categories usually unlock the most eligibility per pass, because they gate query matching for the whole catalog.
- Treat completeness as an impression multiplier. Every identifier restored, every attribute added to a title, widens the auction pool the product can enter. Impressions compound off the feed, not off the budget.

My bids are competitive but impressions are low, is that a feed problem?
Very often, yes. Bids only matter in auctions you're eligible to enter. If your titles don't contain the words shoppers type, or your identifiers don't match Google's catalog, you never reach the auction, so no bid, however high, wins you the impression. Rule out eligibility before raising bids.
Does adding more products increase impressions?
Only if the new products carry complete data. Products missing identifiers, categories or usable titles add feed volume without adding eligible impressions, and can drag your overall feed quality signal down, which affects the products that were fine.
How quickly do feed changes show up as more impressions?
Once the improved feed is fetched and reprocessed by Google, eligibility changes take effect within a day or two. Quality-signal effects (the auction rewarding trustworthy data) build more gradually as impressions accumulate.
