Missing attribute

What causes the "Missing attribute" error in Merchant Center and how to fix it.

Plain-English summary

This is a catch-all error meaning a required attribute for the product's category isn't present in your feed at all. Fix it by checking the product data spec for that category and filling in every attribute it requires.

What triggers it

"Missing attribute" is Google's general catch-all for a required field that's entirely absent from a product's data, as opposed to a specific named error like a missing price or missing category. Which attributes count as required depends on the product's category: general attributes apply to every product, while categories like apparel add their own extras (colour, size, gender, age group) on top.

This tends to appear when a feed template was built for one category and reused for products in a different one, or when a platform sync doesn't populate every field a specific category needs. See the product data spec overview for the full attribute list by category.

Enrichment checks each product against the attributes its specific category requires and fills gaps on a supplemental layer, so missing-attribute errors get caught before submission rather than after.

Step by step

  1. Check which product and category is flagged. Diagnostics names the affected product; the category it's assigned to determines which attributes are actually required.
  2. Look up the required attributes for that category. The product data spec lists baseline required attributes plus category-specific ones, apparel and a few other categories add extra requirements on top of the general list.
  3. Add the missing attribute to the feed. This is a general catch-all error, not a named one, so confirm exactly which field is absent rather than guessing from the category alone.
  4. Re-submit and check the flag clears. Once the attribute is present and Google re-fetches the feed, the error should clear within the normal crawl window.
