Activating RPCSS
Step-by-step guide to switching on RPCSS in /tools, what happens to your campaigns and Merchant Center, why there's no migration risk, and how long until you see the CPC saving.
Activating RPCSS takes a couple of clicks in /tools and starts routing your Shopping ads through the CSS instead of Google's own, so you pay roughly 20% less per click for the same auction position. Your campaigns, Merchant Center and product feed are untouched, there's no migration, and you can switch back at any time. The saving shows up in your CPC within a few days of activation.
Before you start
You'll need:
- A /tools account with an active subscription (tools.rp.ltd): RPCSS is included, so there's nothing extra to buy
- Your Merchant Center already connected to /tools
- Shopping traffic in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland: this is where the CSS saving applies
If you're not yet clear on what a CSS does, read What a CSS is, and the ~20% CPC saving first. The short version: your ads get placed through RPCSS instead of Google's own CSS, which cuts roughly 20% off your cost-per-click for the same position.
What happens when you activate
Activation links the RPCSS Comparison Shopping Service to your existing Merchant Center. That's the entire mechanical change. To be explicit about what stays put:
- Your Merchant Center account: unchanged, same account, same ID
- Your product feed: unchanged, same feed URL from /tools
- Your Google Ads campaigns: unchanged, same structure, budgets and bidding
- Your ad rank and which products show: unchanged, same auction
- Your cost-per-click: this is the one thing that changes: down by roughly 20%
There is no migration, no re-upload, no downtime and no data reset. Your campaigns run continuously through the whole process.
Deep dive Why there's no migration risk
The reason CSS switches used to be nerve-racking is that the old agency model involved moving control of your Merchant Center to a third party, often with a fresh account and a feed re-submission: plenty of room for things to break. RPCSS in /tools works differently: it associates the CSS with the account you already own and run. You keep ownership of your Merchant Center and your Google Ads account throughout; /tools never takes them over.
Because the products, feed and campaigns are identical before and after, there's nothing for Google to re-crawl or re-approve as a result of activation: your existing approvals, quality signals and history all carry straight over. The only observable effect is the CPC dropping. And because the change is just an account association, deactivating reverts you to Google's own CSS just as cleanly, with the same continuity.
After activation
Give the change a few days to propagate across your placements, then compare your average CPC in Google Ads for the same campaigns and positions. You should see it fall by roughly 20%. From there you have a choice:
- Keep spend flat and enjoy more clicks for the same budget, or
- Hold clicks flat and spend less: improving your return on ad spend
Either way, the saving compounds with everything else in /tools: a healthier feed wins more auctions, and if you run a target-ROAS strategy, cheaper clicks feed straight into a better ROAS outcome.
If you run more than one store, activate RPCSS per store: each store has its own Merchant Center connection and its own CSS status.
Common questions
For the misconceptions that come up most (does it change my ranking, do I leave Google Shopping, does it work outside Europe, can I run more than one CSS) see CSS: FAQs and myths.
Step by step
- Open CSS in /tools. Log in at tools.rp.ltd, open your store, and go to the CSS module. You'll see your current status and an estimate of your monthly saving based on your recent Shopping spend.
- Confirm your selling region. CSS applies to the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland. Confirm you sell into those markets, the saving applies to that traffic. If you sell only outside that zone, CSS won't apply.
- Activate RPCSS. Choose Activate. /tools links your Merchant Center to the RPCSS Comparison Shopping Service. Nothing about your feed, products or campaigns changes, only the service placing your ads.
- Let the change propagate. Google applies the CSS to your Shopping placements over the next few days. There's no downtime and your ads keep running throughout.
- Check your CPC. Within a few days, compare your average CPC before and after in Google Ads. For the same positions you should see it drop by roughly 20%.
Frequently asked questions
Will activating RPCSS pause or disrupt my campaigns?
No. Your campaigns keep running without interruption. RPCSS changes which service places your ads, not the ads, budgets or bidding themselves, there's no pause, no rebuild and no data reset.
Do I have to rebuild my Merchant Center or feed?
No. You keep the same Merchant Center account and the same feed URL from /tools. Activation links the CSS to your existing account, there's no migration and nothing to re-upload.
How long until I see the saving?
The CPC reduction typically shows within a few days of activation, once the change has propagated across your placements. Compare your average CPC for the same positions before and after.
Can I turn it off again?
Yes. You can deactivate at any time and your ads revert to being placed through Google's own CSS. There's no lock-in and no penalty.
