Missing value: size, color, gender, age group

What causes the "Missing value: size, color, gender, age group" error in Merchant Center and how to fix it.

Plain-English summary

This error means an apparel-category product is missing one or more of the demographic and variant attributes Google requires for that category. Fix it by filling in size, color, gender and age_group wherever the category calls for them; these also drive correct variant grouping.

What triggers it

This error fires when a product in an apparel or footwear category is missing one or more of size, color, gender or age_group. These four attributes become required the moment google_product_category places a product in the relevant part of the taxonomy, so a product that's fine in one category can suddenly need all four after a re-categorisation.

Beyond clearing the error, these fields do double duty: they're also what Google uses to group variants of the same product (different sizes or colours of one style) via item_group_id, covered in item group ID and variants. Missing values here often mean variant grouping is broken too, not just this one flag.

Enrichment normalises colour, size, gender and age group values and fills gaps on a supplemental layer, addressing both the missing-value error and downstream variant grouping in one pass.

Step by step

  1. Check which of the four fields is flagged. Diagnostics names the specific attribute (or attributes) missing on the product; apparel categories can require all four or a subset depending on what's sold.
  2. Fill in size, color, gender and age_group where required. These aren't optional extras for apparel, Google's taxonomy triggers the requirement automatically once a product sits in a clothing or footwear category.
  3. Check variant grouping uses these fields consistently. size, color, gender and age_group also drive how Google groups variants of the same product together via item_group_id; inconsistent values across variants can cause grouping issues on top of the missing-value error.
  4. Re-submit and confirm the flag clears. Once all required values are present and Google re-fetches the feed, the error should clear within the normal crawl window.
