Image too big

What causes the "Image too big" error in Merchant Center and how to fix it.

Plain-English summary

This error means your image's file size or pixel dimensions exceed Google's maximum. Fix it by resizing or compressing the image within limits without dropping below the minimum quality.

What triggers it

"Image too big" means the file at image_link exceeds Google's maximum file size or pixel dimensions. It sits at the opposite end of the scale from image too small: both are dimension or size problems, just in opposite directions.

This usually comes from uncompressed originals (straight-from-camera files, or exports at print resolution) being fed directly into the product feed without any resizing step.

/tools checks image dimensions and file size during enrichment, flagging oversized files so they get resized before submission rather than after a disapproval.

Step by step

  1. Check both file size and pixel dimensions. This error can be triggered by either an oversized file (large megabytes) or oversized dimensions, check both against Google's current maximums.
  2. Resize or compress the image. Reduce dimensions or apply reasonable compression to bring the file within limits, keeping enough resolution that it doesn't drop into low-quality territory.
  3. Re-check against the minimums after compressing. Compressing too aggressively can push an image into failing low resolution or low quality checks instead, aim for the middle ground.
  4. Re-submit the resized image. This clears on the next crawl once a correctly sized file is live at image_link.
