Missing or incorrect GTIN: how to fix it

What triggers the "Missing or incorrect GTIN" error in Merchant Center and how to fix it without inventing a barcode.

Plain-English summary

"Missing or incorrect GTIN" means no GTIN was submitted, or the one submitted fails Google's validation (a bad check digit, wrong length, or wrong prefix range). Submit the real manufacturer barcode, or MPN plus brand if the product genuinely has no GTIN.

What triggers it

Google validates every submitted GTIN against its format rules and checksum before matching it to the product. "Missing" means the field was empty; "incorrect" means a value was there but failed validation, most often a mistyped digit, a truncated number (a spreadsheet dropping a leading zero is a classic cause), or a number outside a valid retail range.

The one wrong move to avoid is inventing a number to make the field non-empty. A fabricated GTIN either fails the checksum instantly or, worse, happens to pass it while pointing at someone else's product. For the full run-down of identifier disapprovals and how they escalate at catalogue scale, see GTIN and identifier disapprovals.

/tools validates GTINs before submission and can fill genuine gaps by matching against external barcode databases, flagging anything it can't confidently resolve for a human answer, all without touching your source feed.

Step by step

  1. Confirm which case you're in. Diagnostics distinguishes missing (no value submitted) from incorrect (a value that failed validation). The fix differs for each.
  2. For missing GTINs, get the real barcode. Pull the genuine manufacturer barcode from packaging, your supplier, or a barcode database. Never fabricate a number to fill the field.
  3. For incorrect GTINs, check the checksum and format. The last digit is a checksum of the rest; a typo, a dropped leading zero, or a wrong digit count will always fail. Re-source the number rather than guessing a correction.
  4. If the product genuinely has no GTIN, say so explicitly. Set identifier_exists to false and submit brand plus MPN instead. Leaving the field blank without this flag reads as a missing identifier, not a genuine exception.
