Linking Merchant Center and Google Ads

How to link a Google Merchant Center account to a Google Ads account, the request-and-approve flow, what the link unlocks, and how to fix the common linking problems that block Shopping campaigns.

Plain-English summary

Shopping campaigns can't run until your Merchant Center account (where your products live) is linked to your Google Ads account (where campaigns and budgets live). Linking is a two-part handshake: one side requests, the other approves. Once it's done, Ads can pull your products, report which ones perform, and let you build campaigns from the feed. Most linking failures come down to permissions and approving from the wrong side.

Your products and your ad campaigns live in two separate Google accounts that don't talk to each other by default:

  • Google Merchant Center holds your product feed: titles, prices, images, availability, identifiers.
  • Google Ads holds your campaigns, budgets, bids and conversion data.

A Shopping or Performance Max campaign needs both: the products from Merchant Center and the bidding machinery from Ads. The link is the bridge. Until it exists, Google Ads simply can't see your products, and any Shopping campaign you try to build has nothing to serve.

The handshake: request on one side, approve on the other

Linking is deliberately two-sided so that nobody can attach their ads to your catalogue (or vice versa) without both owners agreeing. One account sends a link request; the other account approves it. Either side can start it (the direction doesn't matter) but both halves must happen.

The single most common linking mistake is doing only the first half: sending the request and assuming it's done. It sits as Pending until someone with the right access on the other account approves it. If your link has been "not working" for days, check for a pending request waiting on the account you didn't start from.

Follow the steps in the summary above to send and approve the request, then verify the status reads Linked, not Pending.

Once active, the link turns on the whole Shopping stack:

  • Campaign creation: Google Ads can now build Shopping and Performance Max campaigns that serve your Merchant Center products.
  • Product-level reporting: Ads can report clicks, cost and conversions per product, which is what makes product-level bid analysis possible in the first place.
  • Feed-driven targeting: the Shopping auction reads your feed to decide eligibility; the link is what lets it.
  • Inventory filtering: you can scope a campaign to part of the feed (a brand, a custom label) using the product-group structure.
Deep dive The linking problems that actually bite

Most "the link is broken" tickets are one of these five, and none of them are really about the link itself:

  • Wrong side approved / never approved. The request was sent but the approval never happened, or someone approved on the same account they requested from. Fix: go to the other account's Linked accounts screen and approve the pending request there.
  • Insufficient permissions. The person requesting or approving lacks Admin rights on their account. A standard or read-only user can view the screen but the Link/Approve button does nothing useful. Fix: get an Admin on each account to do their half.
  • Two different Google logins. In many businesses the Merchant Center and Ads accounts sit under different email logins. The person doing the linking only has access to one, so the second half stalls. Fix: identify who holds Admin on each account before you start.
  • Zero products after a successful link. The link is fine; the products aren't eligible. They're disapproved, still under review, or excluded by the campaign's inventory filter. Fix: work through disapproved products in Merchant Center, then re-check the campaign filter.
  • Conversions not attributing. The accounts are linked and products serve, but you can't see revenue against them. Linking moves products; it doesn't set up measurement. You still need conversion tracking configured in Ads, or every bidding strategy that depends on value is flying blind.

A clean mental model: the link is a plumbing job you do once. If something's wrong after it, the fault is almost always in the feed (eligibility) or in measurement (conversion tracking), not in the pipe.

After linking: the feed does the rest

With the accounts joined, your campaigns serve from whatever's in your feed at the time: you never re-link when you update products. That's the point to get the feed right: linking makes your products visible to Ads, but their titles, categories, identifiers and prices decide whether they win. Link the accounts, confirm products flow, then put your effort where it pays: into the product data itself. /tools serves an enriched feed to Merchant Center non-destructively, so your source platform data is never overwritten and the same clean data flows into every campaign the link feeds.

Step by step

  1. Confirm you have the right access on both accounts. You need Admin access to the Merchant Center account and Admin (or the linking permission) on the Google Ads account. If different people own the two accounts, get them both to hand, you'll need one to request and the other to approve.
  2. Send the link request from one side. In Merchant Center, go to Settings → Linked accounts → Google Ads, enter the 10-digit Ads customer ID and click Link. (You can equally start from Google Ads under Tools → Linked accounts → Google Merchant Center, either side can initiate.)
  3. Approve the request from the other side. Switch to the account you didn't start from, the Ads account if you requested from Merchant Center, and approve the pending request under the same Linked accounts screen. Nothing works until both halves are done.
  4. Verify the link is active. Back in Merchant Center, the Google Ads entry should show a status of Linked (not Pending). In Google Ads, you should now be able to create a Shopping or Performance Max campaign and see your Merchant Center feed available as a source.
  5. Create your first Shopping campaign to confirm products flow. Build a campaign, select the linked Merchant Center account, and check that your product count appears. If it's zero, the products are disapproved or filtered, that's a feed problem, not a linking one.

Frequently asked questions

I linked the accounts but Google Ads shows zero products. What's wrong?

The link is working, the problem is downstream. Zero products almost always means your items are disapproved, pending review, or filtered out by the campaign's inventory settings. Check Merchant Center diagnostics first, then the campaign's product filter.

Can one Merchant Center account link to more than one Google Ads account?

Yes. A single Merchant Center account can be linked to multiple Ads accounts, and one Ads account can link to multiple Merchant Center accounts. Each link is a separate request-and-approve handshake.

Do I need to re-link when I change my feed?

No. The link is between accounts, not feeds. Updating, re-uploading or enriching your product data doesn't touch the link, your campaigns keep serving from the latest feed automatically.
