Limited performance due to missing identifiers: how to fix it
What the "Limited performance due to missing identifiers: GTIN, MPN, brand" warning means in Merchant Center and how to clear it.
"Limited performance due to missing identifiers" is a warning, not a disapproval, your product still shows, but with capped reach because none of GTIN, MPN or brand were submitted. Add at least brand plus one of GTIN or MPN, or set identifier_exists to false if the product genuinely has none.
What triggers it
Google relies on GTIN, MPN and brand to match your product against the wider catalogue of other retailers selling the same item, which is what powers competitive pricing insight and richer matching. When none of the three are submitted, Google still accepts the listing (this is a warning, not a disapproval), but caps its performance since it has nothing to match against.
It commonly happens on newly added products where identifier fields weren't populated yet, or on categories where a merchant assumed identifiers weren't needed. Most physical products manufactured by a third party do have a real GTIN or MPN somewhere, worth checking before defaulting to identifier_exists: false.
/tools flags products missing identifiers as part of feed health scoring and fills genuine gaps from external barcode data where a confident match exists, so fewer products sit capped by this warning.
Step by step
- Check which identifiers are actually missing. Diagnostics lists GTIN, MPN and brand together, but usually all three are genuinely absent rather than just one.
- Add brand, plus GTIN or MPN, wherever they truly exist. You don't need all three, brand plus one of GTIN or MPN is enough to clear the cap for most categories.
- Set identifier_exists to false if there's genuinely nothing to add. For products that really have no manufacturer identifiers (own-made goods, bespoke items), set this explicitly rather than leaving the fields blank, it tells Google the gap is deliberate, not an oversight.
- Resubmit. Push the updated feed. The warning clears on the next crawl once identifiers (or the explicit flag) are present.
Frequently asked questions
Does this warning stop my product from showing?
No. Unlike a disapproval, the product stays live, but Google caps how well it can perform because it can't confidently match it against catalogue and pricing data other retailers provide for the same item.
