Invalid product category

What causes the "Invalid product category" error in Merchant Center and how to fix it.

Plain-English summary

This error means the google_product_category value you submitted doesn't match a real entry in Google's taxonomy, often a typo, an old ID, or a made-up category name. Fix it by replacing the value with an exact category from Google's published taxonomy, ideally the most specific leaf node that fits the product.

What triggers it

"Invalid product category" fires when the google_product_category value in your feed doesn't correspond to any real node in Google's taxonomy. This is different from choosing a category that's merely too broad or a poor fit, here the value itself doesn't exist: a typo in the path, an ID that's been retired, or a category invented to describe something Google's taxonomy simply doesn't split out that way.

It's easy to introduce by hand-editing a spreadsheet, copying a category string from an old export, or mapping a platform-specific category that has no direct equivalent. See google_product_category vs product_type for why this field matters so much and how it differs from your own product_type.

Because enrichment maps each product to a real, specific node in Google's taxonomy on a supplemental layer, it catches invalid or mismatched category values before they reach Google, rather than after a rejection.

Step by step

  1. Find the exact value you submitted. Check the product in Diagnostics and note the raw google_product_category value in your feed, whether it's a text path or a numeric ID.
  2. Compare it against Google's published taxonomy. Google publishes the full list of valid categories and IDs. Your value needs to match one of these exactly; a near-miss spelling, an extra word, or an outdated ID all count as invalid.
  3. Replace it with the most specific matching leaf node. Pick the deepest category that genuinely describes the product, not just a safe top-level guess. A specific leaf node also triggers the right required-attribute checks for that category.
  4. Re-submit and confirm the flag clears. Once the corrected value is in the feed and Google re-fetches it, the error should clear within the normal crawl window.
