Image too generic

What causes the "Image too generic" error in Merchant Center and how to fix it.

Plain-English summary

This error means your primary image is a placeholder, brand logo, or generic stock graphic rather than a photo of the actual product. Fix it by using a real photo of the specific product being sold.

What triggers it

"Image too generic" fires when the primary image doesn't represent the specific product being sold, most often a placeholder graphic, a brand logo standing in for a photo, or one image shared across multiple products or variants that should look different from each other. Google wants the primary image to be evidence of the actual item, not a stand-in.

This is one of the five causes covered in full in image policy and image disapprovals, and it's the one most often caused by feed automation defaulting to a placeholder rather than a merchant's deliberate choice.

/tools flags products sharing an identical image across variants or falling back to a placeholder, so generic-image problems surface before Google disapproves the listing.

Step by step

  1. Check whether the image actually shows this specific product. A placeholder graphic, a brand logo, a 'coming soon' image, or one image reused across genuinely different products all count as generic.
  2. Check colour and pattern variants individually. A red and a blue variant sharing the same photo also gets flagged as generic or mismatched, each visually distinct variant needs its own image.
  3. Replace with a real photo of the specific item. Use actual product photography for this exact product and variant, not a category thumbnail or a shared brand image.
  4. Hold back products awaiting real photography. If a genuine product photo isn't ready yet, it's better to exclude the product from the feed than ship it with a placeholder.
